Vitamin A

There are so many vitamins necessary for optimal health of our bodies. Vitamin A is one of those. It is important for normal vision, the immune system, and reproduction. Vitamin A also helps the heart, lungs, kidneys, and other organs work properly.

There are two different types of vitamin A. The first type, preformed vitamin A, is found in meat, poultry, fish such as salmon, and dairy products. The second type, provitamin A, is found in fruits, vegetables, and other plant-based products. The most common type of provitamin A in foods and dietary supplements is beta-carotene.

The amount of vitamin A that a person needs depends on your age and gender.  Some people are prone to having low vitamin A levels such as premature infants, infants, young children, pregnant women, and women who are breastfeeding. Those with cystic fibrosis also can have too low of vitamin A levels.

One of the most common symptoms of vitamin A deficiency in young children and pregnant women is an eye condition called xerophthalmia. Xerophthalmia is the inability to see in low light, and it can lead to blindness if it isn’t treated. Vitamin A may also help with cancer prevention, help with age related macular degeneration, and reduce the severity of measles.

Simply Nutrients offers a variety of Vitamin A supplements to meet your needs.
