Stomach Discomfort
Digestion is more than just your stomach. It begins in the mouth. After the mouth, the stomach further breaks down solids with acid so that bacteria and enzymes in the gastrointestinal tract can more readily synthesize and absorb nutrients. The stomach also stores swallowed food before it moves into the gastrointestinal tract.
Because the stomach serves several functions, challenges causing discomfort can occur as a result of the types of food we eat and the quantity. These issues can affect the esophageal sphincter, which is a valve at the end of the esophagus that keeps digesting food from moving back up into the throat; the interior lining of the stomach; and the pyloric sphincter that leads into the gastrointestinal tract.
Stomach discomfort supplements work alongside one's natural enzymes and cells within the tissue of the stomach to promote the release and function of acid (and normal amounts of acid), muscular tissue and valves. These supplements combine “good” bacteria, vitamins and minerals, and herbal extracts to help maintain a healthy stomach and may promote abdominal comfort.
Some supplements that can aid in digestion and stomach health include:
- Magnesium
- Calcium
- Ginger
- Vitamin B
- Pre and probiotics
- and more
