Thyroid

The thyroid gland is a large butterfly shaped gland that is located at the base of your neck, tucked below skin and muscles, and is part of the endocrine system. The thyroid gland is a part of a biofeedback system.

First, the hypothalamus and pituitary glands help to maintain the thyroid gland hormone levels. If the thyroid hormones are too high, a biofeedback shuts down the hypothalamus and pituitary gland secretions so the thyroid slows down its production of its hormones. It the thyroid gland hormones are too low, biofeedback tells the hypothalamus and pituitary glands to stimulate the thyroid gland to produce more T3 &T4 and maintain its homeostasis. The thyroid gland utilizes iodine to produce Triiodothyronine (T3) & Thyroxine (T4). It is vital to have these hormones within a normal range.

The thyroid glands hormones plays an important role in several bodily functions, including metabolism. The thyroid hormones control many body functions including heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, breathing, weight, strength, menstrual cycles, cholesterol, and more. There are many different supplements that can help support the thyroid gland including iodine, zinc and copper.

There are many different symptoms a person can feel if their thyroid hormones (T3 /T4) are not within normal range. Some symptoms that can be consistent with low T3/T4 levels (hypothyroidism) include: trouble sleeping, tiredness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, dry skin and hair, depression, temperature sensitivity, frequent & heavy periods, and joint/ muscle pains.
